America’s Education and Media Institutions are Lost

Teaching Evolution in Schools

It’s a hard thing to say. Nobody likes to admit defeat, but in America, it’s no longer a matter of fighting a winnable fight when it comes to the news media and the public educational systems of the country. Today, we’re only able to fight the “good fight” and hope that we can reach those who can be touched by the Word of God. Nearly all attempts to preserve the remnant of Christian truth in two of the most influential arenas of our country are no longer possible on a large scale.

This doesn’t mean that we should stop fighting.

A recent story on the liberal political website Raw Story shows both institutions working against the Word of God. On the education front, it’s a story of Kansas schools that are trying to adopt scientific standards in their curriculum starting from Kindergarten and going through until graduation from high school. They promote the theory of evolution as truth, of course. These standards are being challenged by a couple of religious organizations that are trying to fight through legal channels to prevent this from happening. The schools want to teach evolution and leave no room for the possibility of Creation.

On the other hand, we have the liberal “journalist” attempting to tell the story in a way that ridicules the beliefs of the groups trying to halt the educational mandates. “Journalist” David Ferguson uses phrases such as “Christian creation myth” to tell an unbiased story of the news in question. Scrolling down to the comments reveals that the majority of the readers have been swayed towards this mentality surrounding Creation. The few who defend the truth that evolution is a theory that fails when put under the scrutiny of scientific method are attacked viciously by other commenters.

As Christians, we must reevaluate how we address situations like this. There are those who say that schools must teach both ideologies. If they’re going to teach evolution, they must teach Creationism as well, according to many Christian political groups. For example, Citizens for Objective Public Education (COPE) posted a press release (PDF) about their legal filing. One of the quotes from the release says that the Kansas State Department of Education is violating the 1st and 14th Amendments because their educational framework “will have the effect of causing Kansas public schools to establish and endorse a non-theistic religious worldview”. The majority of the release is well-written and at one point actually gets to the real heart of the matter.

John H. Calvert, counsel for the plaintiffs, stated that “this case is actually about a concealed Orthodoxy that requires all explanations provided by science to be materialistic/atheistic. It is particularly problematic in the area of origins science which addresses ultimate religious questions, like: Where do we come from? Public education about origins science needs to adequately and objectively inform age appropriate audiences about the use of the Orthodoxy and the relevant information and data it suppresses.”

The portions in bold are really at the heart of this issue as well as other challenges faced by Christians and non-Christians alike. Though few atheists and agnostics would admit it or even realize it, they are part of a religion. Lack of belief in God turns people in directions that guide their actions throughout life. It’s not a lack of religion that is in play in the minds and hearts of non-believers. It’s a misunderstood religiosity that drives them – in many cases without their own understanding of the effects it has on the way they live their lives.

It’s for this reason that we’re losing the battles. This is why we must reevaluate. Non-Christians have been mobilized (again, often times without their own understanding of their situation) to fight because their minds have been closed to any option that contradicts their worldview. Many claim to be on the open minded side of the arguments, but their actions and words betray this stance. This is why the fight to attempt to force schools to teach both evolution and Christianity are no longer winnable battles. They are only open minded when it’s convenient to them and their numbers are growing rapidly.

If you trace back through history, you will find that the true downfall of the country started when the liberal mindset started spreading through the two institutions. The majority of educators and journalists are liberal. As a result, they are breeding more liberals into their ranks. As the generations pass since the middle of the 20th century, the liberal foothold in the institutions has grown so strong that it’s a practical impossibility for them to be brought back into the proper Christian worldview without an extreme situation such as the Second Coming of Christ.

As Christians, we must assume that He can come at any time or may not come at all in our lifetime. With that understood, the way that we fight against the advancement of the liberal ideologies that hurt the growth of Christianity in America must be done in a different manner.

It must be personal. We have a duty to spread the Gospel, to protect those closest to us, and to help others see the light. Rather than fighting a political battle, it must shift to become one of awareness. It starts at home, of course. Those who cannot homeschool or send their children to private schools must shield their children with the truth. They must be made aware that they will be taught the wrong things in many circumstances, most obviously in the case of the theory of evolution. They must be taught the importance of standing up for their faith regardless of the scholastic consequences and be prepared for “educational persecution” such as what happened to the student in Tennessee.

Once this is covered, we must then start educating whoever we can. The media will not help us. The schools definitely will not help and will fight us as a result. Still, we must use whatever resources we have to spread the Word and the Truth. The internet is one of our greatest liabilities as Christians; the reach of the liberal media is magnified through the internet. However, it’s on battle ground in which we should continue to wage battle for the Truth. Political channels may be breaking down for Christians, but the internet is ripe for us to engage with more people, believers and non-believers alike. We may someday lose that venue as well, but for now we are able to touch people through social media, blogs, comments, and other websites.

None of this can happen until you’re truly ready to participate. To do so, we must be certain that we’re completely covered by the Armor of God:

Ephesians 6:10-18 (KJV)

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

This battle is not going to end until the Lord comes. While the comforting thought of His return can fill us with strength, it can also make us complacent. We may get discouraged and want to flee to the safety of submissive anonymity. We may focus inward and try to bide our time, keeping our children close and not worrying about the ways of the world. These may be the proper path for some, but for others who are able and willing to fight, it may be our calling to go forth and spread the Gospel to those within our circle of influence. It is something that you all should pray on, to be shown the necessary strength if it is His Will.

As Christians, we must start fighting the right battles in order to reach as many as possible before the end.
